When Jake Starr was informed that his wife was in a car accident, and subsequently found out that his daughter would be leaving for Texas, things have really put Jake in a weird state of flux emotionally. He has been feeling that he should be trying to handle the situation in his own manner, but also realizes that he cannot jeopardize his daughter's situation by reacting in a manner that would do just that. It's a internal struggle that has him severely torn, and unsure of what he feels from one moment to the next.
While Jake has been struggling to process everything, however, his parents made their "surprise" arrival, and told Mara that she was going to be taking an impromptu vacation with them, down to Texas. Mara's reaction was sheer delight, as she loves spending time with all of her grandparents, and she also realizes she'll probably be spoiled the entire time as well. This reaction to the "surprise" showed everyone involved that she truly is in the dark about why she is really leaving Des Moines for a short while. Jake and Eric's efforts to keep the events surrounding the whole ordeal from Mara have been a success, even when she actually inquired about her mother's vehicle. The story given was that it had broken, and needed to be fixed before Roeper could safely drive it again. The thought process being that one day Mara will find out the truth about what happened, and technically, they did not lie to her.
With all parties en route to the hanger at Des Moines International Airport, they ultimately arrive, exit their vehicles, and watch as an excited Mara sees the private jet that she will be flying out on. This jet sits beside the Golden Nugget jet that Jake is used to flying on, which Jake does find a tad bit odd, but relatively meaningless overall. Roeper and Jake's mom gather up many of the bags, and begin making their way toward the aircraft. Jake, his father, Jeff, and Eric gather around the vehicles for a "final" chat, before setting off.
Jake Starr: ... You know, I am still not entirely certain about all of this, Dad... Something about this whole situation just doesn't feel right. I mean, I'm sending my daughter into the equivalent of witness protection...
Jeff Starr: Jake... We've talked about all of this, and you know, just like the rest of us, that this is the right move for right now. She's not entering witness protection. She's simply getting away from the situation until it's blown over. She'll ultimately be back, and all will be normal once this gets settled.
Jake Starr: Well what if they try something when she's down with you guys? Like down in Texas? I mean, this is all to intimidate us, right, so why not let it follow her?
Jeff Starr: I sincerely doubt they'll go to those lengths, son...
Eric weighs in on Jake's uncertainty.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: Yeah, I'm pretty sure your dad is right, there, Jake.
Jake looks at Eric.
Jake Starr: How can you be sure, man? Why wouldn't they try and just do it any and everywhere to prove their point?
Jeff jumps back in.
Jeff Starr: It wouldn't make sense, Jake. What would that prove, if they did something in Texas? Nothing. It wouldn't resonate. Quite frankly, we all kind of assume they are simply out to make Des Moines look like a place where you don't want to be. If they did that everywhere, what good would it serve them? They seemingly just want you out of here. They want THIS to be your "unsafe" space, so you go elsewhere.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: Exactly... They just want your life here to be a living hell. So they're not going to go out of their way to try and add other locations to that list.
Jake Starr: But how can you HONESTLY be this sure, man? I mean, really? How can you assume anything with these people? I wouldn't have guessed they would have tried to harm my wife, for fuck's sake, and yet, HERE WE ARE!
Eric smirks.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: It's kind of easy to know what they're up to, since they've been tailing you since the moment we picked your parents up the other day.
Jake goes to look around, but Eric quickly puts a stop to that.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: Quit... Don't look around. The fact is, they're watching your every move, waiting to strike. They know, right now, that you have a lot of eyes around you, so they're biding their time, I think...
Jake is aghast.
Jake Starr: What in the hell, man?! Why would you have not told me this BEFORE this very moment?!
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: Quite frankly there wasn't a need...
Jake becomes enraged.
Jake Starr: WASN'T A NEED?! REALLY?! ON WHAT FUCKING PLANET WOULD MY FAMILY BEING STALKED BE A "NEED TO KNOW" THING?! THEY'RE SPYING ON ME, MAN! THAT IS SOME FUCKING CAUSE FOR CONCERN!
Eric brushes Jake's rage off.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: Nah... Not really...
Jake Starr: HOW CAN YOU SAY "NAH" SO CALMLY? THERE'S SOME UNKNOWN GROUP OF THUGS TAILING ME AND MY FAMILY!
Eric smirks again.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: Oh it's easy when I had my guys tailing them, in a very obvious manner. I had them make it clear that we knew they were there, and were watching them in return. You could definitely see the nerves in their actions, when they knew they were being watched right back. Honestly, I figured they would have backed off after that, but they haven't. So that's why we're going to put one over on these guys when they see you board the plane and fly off as well.
Jake's eyes go wide.
Jake Starr: Do WHAT?!
Roeper, who had come back for another load of items to take to the plane overhears this, and her eyes, too, go wide in shock.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: ... Yup... You're both going to, in fact!
Jake Starr: The hell we are!
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: Oh shut up, there's a Goddamn reason for it...
Jake Starr: Well then, oh wise one, why don't you enlighten me to what that reason is!
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: They're planning to make another attempt to "get to you," but this time, you personally. So they'll need the chance so we can actually catch them in the act. They have to think that they can get one over on you as well, and the only way to do that is to think everyone is gone.
Jake Starr: You just said they know they're being watched. So obviously they're not going to do shit.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: They will. I pulled my guys back. The thought is that move, coupled with you getting on the plane, should help draw them out. And don't worry... My guys are there, but they're not "there." Hopefully if they take the bait, this will be wrapped up sooner than later. I don't want this to be some long and suspicious vacation for Mara. I want this to be something that seems natural.
Jake Starr: Do you fucking realize how stupid this all sounds? I mean this seriously borderlines on sounding like some shitty plotline in a b-movie. It's just all bullshit, man. You said we were going to handle this right, and shouldn't that involve the authorities? Since we're ignoring that, why can't we just go get them and make them realize that they can either leave us alone, or be forced to leave us alone?
Eric steps right into Jake's face. He is one of the few who have this ability with Jake, and can do so without fear of Jake trying to reciprocate. Eric, while an equal to Jake in terms of their career, Eric's success in life to the level that it is has Jake always feeling as if he is striving to gain Eric's long term approval. Eric knows this, and rarely tries to exploit it, simply because he loves Jake like a brother, and has for years. This is one of the few times he tries to pull his trump card on Jake, and get Jake to, in a sense, cower to his will.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: This is not becoming physical Jake. Period. You're going to go get on that plane, and you're going to follow this plan. It may sound crazy, but we need them to do this in order to really twist the screws, and get some resolution, you understand? Now... You're not going to Texas. You're going to take off, and fly around in a holding pattern for 15 or 20 minutes. After that, you're going to land, and you and Roeper will be dropped off. That gives them enough time to realize everyone is gone and do whatever it is they're going to do. Then, we will swoop in, and get this ball rolling with their stupidity...
Jake Starr: This sounds silly, you know that, right? I mean, utterly ridiculous and silly.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: Yes... And you beating people outside of the ring sure sounds like an adult thing, huh? You have to understand that we have to try something to get more leverage in the situation, Jake. If we don't, and nip this in the bud immediately, you're going to have people stalking you until they get you to do what they want.
Jake Starr: This isn't the fucking movies, Eric. They aren't going to lured out, magically do something to me, and hope I get the message.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: They did it to Roeper, while she was in the mall, in full sight of everyone. They didn't know if they'd get caught then, or how long they had. They were ballsy.
Jake Starr: ... And as you said they got busted on the surveillance cameras. Soooo, why do we need to do more?
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: You're right... They were caught. And we have eyes ACTIVELY on this lot. So when they want to "get you," like they did Roeper, we will be able to nip it in the bud. So the team figured we give them a chance, and if they do it, we catch them, and we begin to direct the narrative of the whole situation. We'll have more answers, too. But we have to get these guys out in the open so we can apply pressure to them legally. For once, baiting guys in like this is going to be more rewarding to everyone in the long run.
Jake Starr: And if they succeed, what happens? What happens if they do fuck with me, too?
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: Are you seriously worried about money? When have I ever made you do that? I mean, Roeper's car is going to be totaled, and I'll handle that...
Jake Starr: But Eric, when do I actually get to handle situations myself?
Eric smiles, and looks Jake in the eyes.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: You handle them everyday, my friend. You're looking out for your family's well being, and providing for them. I'm simply taking some of the trivial and menial issues off of your shoulders, so you can focus on the big issues that are far more important. Trust me, my friend, I get your frustrations, I get your doubt, and I get your worry. You just need to trust that my team knows what it is doing...
Jeff chimes in once again.
Jeff Starr: Eric's right, son. If they don't act, then it shows us they're just "watching" us. If they do, they now have leverage.
Jeff wraps his arm around Jake.
Jeff Starr: C'mon, son... Let's go...
Jake sighs, and looks at Eric one more time.
Jake Starr: So let me ask... Why the different plane, and not the Nugget one?
Eric smirks.
Eric "Agent oo6" Rommel: Meh... A whale wanted to come in and blow a few hundred thousand at the craps tables, so I figured I'd let him borrow it. But don't wory, once he's done I'll send it back out to you, probably. But trust me... This other one is jst as pretty!
Jeff Starr: I'll say it's the nicest jet I have ever been on...
Jake sighs again, before feeling his father pulling him in the direction of the aircraft. Eric, in turn, makes way for his plane, and once everyone has boarded, the two aircrafts get word that they are cleared for taxi and takeoff. The planes depart the airfield, and the two individuals who have been following Jake for the past few days watch as the plane soars up into the heavens. As the plane ascends, the two slowly get out of their vehicle and begin to look around. They know they have been followed, basically bumper to bumper, but today was different.
After a couple of minutes of ensuring their "safety" the pair quickly make their way over to Jake's vehicle. Before doing anything, the pair look around to ensure no other random eyes are watching them, and after the coast is deemed clear, they begin the assault on the vehicle. The first shot is to the rear tires, as they slash the both, and watch them deflate. The two then duck down, and go under the vehicle to begin cutting any electronics wires and fluid lines, while also looking for any other systems they could also compromise. They act in as quick of a manner as possible, before slowly sliding out from beneath, only to immediately be surrounded by members of Eric's entourage, as well as members of Jake's legal team.
After briefly assessing the situation, the two, admittedly slender and small men try to make a run for it, only to be grabbed by the brutes Eric brought with him. They easily outmuscle the two men, and again put them in the middle of the vulturous circle of individuals. The lawyers continue to stare at the two men for several minutes, trying to build the angst. After that period, one steps forward, and gives a simple decree to the pair.
Lawyer: Gents... What will it be... The easy way, or hard way?
After making the statement to the two men, the sound of a jet engine approaching begins to echo in the air. As it continues to grow apparent that the sound is truly approaching their area, the two men turn around to see the aircraft Jake just departed on returning to the hangar. They begin to realize that this whole ordeal had been a ruse to draw them out into the open, and it had, in fact, worked. They just stare as the plane comes to a stop, the stairs are lowered, and Jake Starr slowly descends. Jake, as he deplanes, looks up to see the men standing there surrounded, and actually is surprised to see that Eric's idea had actually worked. He simply stares, and then immediately takes out his phone to presumably call Eric on board his aircraft.
The scene fades in on a picture of Jake Starr holding his protest sign from his previous promo, and slowly the following text appears.
When Breakdown goes live it will be 3046 days without Jake Starr featured on SCW's main site.
#JakeStarrForWrestlerSpotlightOnSCWWebsite
The picture fades out, and then fades in on Jake Starr himself, oddly in the exact same pose, same clothes, and same facial expression as the picture. This time, however, it is not a still shot, but Jake Starr himself, who, after receiving the cue, begins to speak.
Jake Starr: When it comes to Jake Starr and Rise to Greatness, memorable moments is something that has become expected. I'm expected to be one of the guys who is capable of going out there in ANY type of match and bringing the house down. This year, I was beginning to wonder if I would get that opportunity. Deep down I had a feeling that Big Dick Bad Daddy D wouldn't have the guts to actually put me in the Women's Title match, outright. Part of him realizes the benefit it would have to company financially because people would tune in. But the other part is a purest. He believes things are as they are for a reason, and he hopes to keep it that way.
So I made one last ditched effort, for a memorable moment...
I decided to try and play the same card as the Women's Title match would have, but instead, gone a route that would have made him just as much money.
I posed the idea of the Scaffold Scramble!
Now let me tell you about his initial reaction. Dude was surprised. I mean, he was expecting Jake Starr to pose something crazy, like being put in the Women's Title match by earning his way in, or something, but then I threw that out there. I explained my idea. I explained why. And he knew my mentality on it. He knew that it gave me MULTIPLE options and MULTIPLE outs. He realized I wasn't putting just Jake Starr in a situation to succeed, but I was suggesting others as well. He realized that, for once, Jake Starr had brought him something he could run with.
Next thing I know... He actually agreed to it...
And that's when I shit my pants... Well figuratively... I think... A small nugget MAY have come out, but I don't remember, and I don't do my own laundry... But I tell you, there was a distinct possibility that I pooed at that moment!
I didn't expect it. I didn't anticipate him actually liking my idea. But he did. And then I realized that this would be my chance. I don't know if it'll be my last chance, or just one of the "next chances" I have at Rise to Greatness, but it IS the opportunity that I have, along with Tommy, this year. And I'll say that I am definitely excited about it. I am glad that there is an opportunity for Tommy and I both to have a breakout opportunity at Rise to Greatness. I am glad that the match I am in isn't something just thrown in to say Jake Starr was involved, but something people will GENUINELY care about, and could GENUINELY steal the show.
And I think it's safe to say Tommy probably is in agreement. We will have combined and individual opportunities alike. And it's something we have been involved with in the past as well. There was a time where Jake Starr was the World Champion and he and I sided together in Tactical Warfare. Our team won, and Tommy became World Champion. There was no ill-will between us, and we moved on. So because there is a single's title on the line, greed won't play a factor. The fact is, we want to win everything, and we WILL win everything.
As Jake transitions topics, he pumps his protest sign in the air a couple of times.
But that's Rise to Greatness, and that's this Sunday. And before I can officially shift my focus to the masses that will be involved in the Scaffold Scramble, I have to make sure I get through one, final, match, to ensure that I don't walk into Rise to Greatness without momentum. I have to be sure that I walk in ready to fight. I have to be sure that I walk in showing the world that I'm still ready to compete at the biggest show of the year, and do so at the highest level.
To do that successfully, to do that properly, I have to beat Sophie O'Brian. Now Sophie is someone who falls into that catagory of "people I don't know a lot about," and usually, that is because they're a nobody. I don't THINK Sophie is a nobody. I don't think she's a somebody. I think she's someone I can't look past, though. And I can promise you that will not happen.
When this match was announced, I felt the urge to brush it off. I felt the need to completely act like it would be a cake walk, and I didn't have to actually put forth any legitimate effort in actually winning. I honestly felt like it would just be that easy.
But then she opened her mouth...
Then she started talking about Jake Starr...
That's when I realized I couldn't simply look past her because what she said showed she knew a little more about Jake Starr than most people let on. She knew about the fights I had with The Sisterhood, and she recognized the successes I had with it. She applauded the beatdowns. She applauded the lack of concern I had with beating them down. And the recognition of who I am and what I have done didn't end there. No... She talked about how I have always been the one guy who told it like it was.
Sophie couldn't stop singing my praises...
Jake freezes and starts staring into the camera with a blank stare.
... I mean, what am I supposed to say here? Umm... Thanks, I guess?
I just am not used to this. It's like D actually saying, "hey Jake, good idea, let's do it!" None of it makes sense. It doesn't make sense to have someone who talks about how great I am, how wonderful I am, how I am just like she is, and then says I'm going to succumb, tap out, and quit?
Really?
Jake Starr... Tapping out?
Jake Starr... Succumbing?
Jake Starr... Quitting?!
Really, Sophie? Really? Do you really think that I would, in any form or fashion, ever contemplate tapping out or quitting? I'm serious... Do you really think that you will bring that out of me? If so, do you realize what you just insinuated? Do you realize what you're ACTUALLY saying? You're saying that you possess the same qualities. Remember, we're one in the same? We are the same type of person, right? So if what you say is true, you have the same flaws in your game, sweetheart. And that means you're just as breakable... You're just as willing to give up... You're just as willing to QUIT!
But I don't see that in you.
So obviously I don't see it in myself.
And because I don't see that quality in either of us, I don't suspect that either of us will succeed in "breaking" the other. I don't think that either of us would walk away feeling like we have left the other in their wake. The fact is, Sophie, you and I are going to walk in there and we are going to brawl. We are going to battle. We are going to fight. When that happens, truly anything is possible, and either of us could win. But if you think you're going to make me tap, quit, or succumb to you, you're nothing like me.
You're simply a dumb bitch, at that point!
Jake snarls.
See, I don't fucking quit. I don't give up. I don't even COMPREHEND what that is like because if you're EVER willing to quit or tap out, you're saying you DO have a breaking point. If you're willing to let someone inflict so much pain on you, you beg for mercy, you have a point in which you can't take anymore. I don't have that point. I don't have a point where I feel like I have to ask someone to intervene and save me.
You claim to be a student of the game, you should know those very facts!
That tells me that, while you may have studied, you didn't learn ANYTHING. I don't have a point where I need someone to jump in to protect me. I've been in this business for TOO LONG and already taken more punishment than you could EVER inflict alone, and I didn't quit. People like Christian Savior and Stacy Kissinger sent me to the hospital with a concussion, completely unconscious, and I came back and destroyed them. They didn't break ANYTHING with me. Infamous, Dark Fantasy, whatever you want to call them, tried to end my career on MULTIPLE occasions, and I came back and fought them tooth and nail. Hell, Silas Mason held my career in the palm of his hand, and yet I was able to overcome the odds, not be his indentured servant, and he was NEVER heard from again.
And after all of that, you're going to be the one who does more than any of them could?
You?
Sophie O'Brian?
What part of all of that is not registering with you?
The fact is, you could very well do something that earns you a victory. You could very well walk out of Breakdown with a "W" over Jake Starr. In this business, it can be anyone's day at anytime. But the likelihood of that happening before Rise to Greatness, when I want and NEED all of the momentum I can salvage, is slim. You see, Sophie, like I have bluntly said, I walk into these fights EXPECTING victory. I don't expect defeat. I don't allow for that thought to enter my head. That means your whole plan is already failing. That means your hopes of setting yourself apart from those who have preceeded you are simply going to be a letdown for you. You're going to walk into Breakdown with your head filled with these ideas and these thoughts, and then...
You're eyes will slowly open, and you'll realize the ref is waking you up...
See, while I appreciate your praise, and I appreciate the fact you have studied me enough to know a lot about me, I am NOT going to take it easy on you, or allow you to take my momentum from me. Rise to Greatness is MY NIGHT, and has been since the day I walked into this company. I'm not going to let you put ANY shred of doubt into my head going into this weekend. I am NOT going to let you ruin this year for me. I have done too much, and invested too much time and energy into showing the world I am back to let you derail it at the absolute worst time possible.
So get the idea of me quitting, tapping out, or anything of the sorts out of your head. Stop thinking you're going to break my will. This match at Breakdown will be, if anything, a reality check for you, where you can realize that no matter how much you study, how much you research, there is nothing that can compare to pure experience. In SCW, you don't have that experience. You don't have the ability to rest on the laurels of what you've accomplished to back up your assertions. I do, and I will. This time of year is always when I step my game up, and go above and beyond. I don't lose, this time of year, and you will NOT be the person who changes that.
Be prepared to appreciate me more after Breakdown...
Be prepared to walk out with assistance...
Be prepared to understand why I am how I am!
I'm Jake Starr... And at Breakdown I show you why there is truly NOBODY like me, no matter how much you want to believe otherwise!
