Every match in Supreme Championship Wrestling means something to someone. At Breakdown, it will be no different. At Breakdown, the last event before the epic two-night pay-per view weekend, Jake Starr walks into the arena to face off against a man who is out to prove to the world that he should be viewed as a serious threat to the entire SCW roster. That man is Havoc Warrior Exodus. This man has been someone who has been a bit of an unknown, even though he's been around for quite a while. Nobody looks at him like he's anything but an occasional superstar on shows like Aggression, and he knows that going out there, standing toe to toe with Jake Starr, and somehow winning, would be an eye opener for all.
Jake also has a lot riding on this match. Everyone knows that his luck going into pay-per views, and even the Trios Tournament, isn't always the best. Some question whether or not he is one of those people who simply fall victim to "looking beyond" opponents, when a major match is on the horizon. He most recently felt that turbulence against David Miller, when he slipped up, and allowed himself to be rolled up, and pinned. It was a moment that made people question whether or not Jake would be able to get his priorities in order, and perform in the Trios Tournament.
This habit Jake has been forming is one that most would love to avoid at all costs. Jake, himself, is someone who doesn't like to have ample momentum going into any match. He doesn't care if it's against a somebody or a nobody, he wants to ride the momentum he has built, and continue to do so. Breakdown will be no different. Since retaining his United States Championship, Jake was able to put his differences with Matt Auclair aside long enough for them to technically pull off a win between the two of them, granted Jake did most, if not all, of the work. It's this momentum Jake wants to continue to carry into Breakdown against Havoc, and then ride into the weekend's festivities.
Jake knows the world is out there listening, and curious about what he has to say. He knows that everyone wants to know what his thoughts are, and if he truly is focused on the match at hand. They also are curious about Jake's thoughts regarding the revelations at Breakdown, when it was determined who he would fight when, come this weekend.
Jake knows everyone wants answers, and he loves giving them.
As the scene fades in, Jake is standing with his United States Championship prominently displayed over his right shoulder. It is a belt he has come to admire more and more, as time has progressed, and is one he is very proud to defend. It is also one that he knows has many people gunning for him. It's that "being the hunted" mentality that drives Jake to keep on going. He also knows that with that "hunted" mentality can come a lot of complacency and trip ups. It has been what has stymied him in the past, and he does not want it to be what stops him in the near future.
As Jake readies his statement, the cameras position themselves, and ready for their cue as well. Once everyone is in their spot, all of the production team turns and face Jake. Jake takes one more deep breath, and nods. With the nod, the cameras a flipped on, and the United States Champion begins to, hopefully, answer many of the lingering questions that are out there from the masses.
Jake Starr: With every single day, things change. It seems that up becomes down, left becomes right, white becomes black, and yes, turtles become cheese...
Jake goes to continue, but immediately pauses, thinking something doesn't sound right.
... Ok I think that last one wasn't how it was supposed to go, but oh well. It gives the idea that everything changes, just like underwear. And by that, I mean everything going on with me. As I move forward, getting closer and closer to my date with destiny at the impending double-PPV, I figured that everything was going to be, in stereotypical SCW fashion, completely a mystery, or something that I wouldn't be able to prepare for. Hell, that's what they LOVE to do with me. Let's build something up, then make everyone guess what will happen next. Look at Riding the Lightning... Jake Starr versus Syren... JUST KIDDING! Jake Starr versus Regan Street, then winner versus Syren!
So the fact that Breakdown gave me the chance to know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, without reservation, without doubt, know who I was going to face first, between Kayl and Steward, I am completely in shock. I like that I have a little time to know what I am in for, but Jesus Christ... It's kind of scary to actually KNOW. It is something that I like! I mean... Hell... I know who I'm fighting first, and WHEN I win, I know who I get to beat after that. It's so lovely!
You know what else is lovely? Having gotten to watch those two fight tooth and nail, all because of ME! Each knew that walking into that match, whoever got to go second would have an advantage because the other two of us would have already been through war. Both knew that facing someone who is already a tad-bit broken, would add to their chances to become the United States Champion. My question is, why couldn't I have gotten the chance to make them fight in Brooklyn, and then the winner could actually have a shot at me? I mean, shouldn't the champion get SOME KIND of perk? Shouldn't I get some kind of "advantage," rather than disadvantage?
Oh well...
When I actually go out there and beat BOTH of them, it'll show a lot of people who have doubted me, that the shit from last year has really fallen by the wayside. It'll get it through many people's thick skulls that I have, not only rebounded, but hit that fountain of youth, and will be destroying people one by one... Or in this case, two at a whack!
But let's be honest here... Jake Starr goes into the pay-per view at an even BIGGER disadvantage because of Breakdown that same week. See, Breakdown goes on on Wednesdays... The pay-per views are on Saturday and Sunday of THE SAME WEEK! Looking at the Breakdown card, I don't see the names of Donovan Kayl or Katie Steward anywhere. Instead, I see the name "Jake Starr." It's something that really makes me wonder if, not only have I been able to "turn back the clock," but maybe the suits have as well. Maybe they're out there trying to do everything in their power to soften me up, ALL with the goal of keeping me from retaining that weekend? Maybe they just didn't think about it, and meant for me to have a night off like those other two? Maybe they have mommy issues, and couldn't get any teet the night they booked the match?
Jake shrugs.
I really don't know! I wish I had that answer. I wish I knew what was going on so I could make sense of why the two CHALLENGERS are getting a lot of the breaks. I don't know... The fact is, I am booked. I am scheduled. I am the guy who has to go out there, and compete. So... I'm going to whine, and complain, and bitch, and piss, and moan, and...
Jake takes a deep breath, having gotten a tad winded, while listing what he is going to do. After catching his breath, he smiles, obviously for a reason.
... Ok I can't even fake the fact that I care that I am going out there. I am someone who has always prided myself on being the guy who competed no matter the odds, and that has not changed. I am still proud to go out there and fight every night if i have to, all with the goal of being seen as the best around. So I'm proud to go out there on Breakdown. I'm GLAD I have to show the world that I can go back to back with victories. I'm glad that I am one of those guys who has the odds stacked against him, 9 times out of 10. The reason I am ok with it is because I know that when I win, people become shocked. People sit there and wonder how anyone could want to have such a grueling schedule, knowing that, in the end, there will be burnout, there will be bruises, and everything will ultimately end, and have to begin again. Call me a masochist, but it's a journey I'm always out to surpass the time before.
In 2009... I wanted to get out there and prove that I could still hang because so many had told me I couldn't, and I was a failure.
In 2010... I wanted to be more than 2009. I became the Superstar of the Year. I was THE GUY.
After that, I forgot about that drive and that passion because I got burnt out. I was beaten up, and there wasn't much I could do to change it. That's why I am enjoying 2014, and enjoying the grind once again. That is why I am not one to piss and moan about things. That is why I am willing to go out there, and destroy whoever and whatever gets in my path, because I know I can do JUST THAT!
So 2014 is my chance to do better than 2011, 2012, and 2013.
I am going out on Breakdown with the purpose of winning, and the purpose of proving I'm the best. I don't care if I'm not as "fresh" as Donovan and Katie, because I know I can beat them no matter how much pain I am in. Neither have ever beaten me, and neither will.
But first comes the aforementioned Breakdown. First comes someone who has never quite had a lot of success in SCW, and if you look at some of my moments against guys like that, I tend to give them a nice mark on their resume. Ask Devon Kayl about that one! So because of my track record of late, why shouldn't Havoc Warrior Exodus think that he has a puncher's chance against me? Others have. Hell, David Miller, a guy who doesn't beat ANYONE anymore, beat me by a fucking ROLL UP! I am beatable... I am the guy who is seemingly giving people some HOPE in the world, that they're not completely irrelevant. I mean, let's be honest... After Devon beat me, I got my revenge. Sure he ducked and ran, but that was basically the description of how his career went from that point forward.
That should make this Havoc person quite excited. His career could become KNOWN after Breakdown, just like Devon's was. He could go from a complete obscure and irrelevant being to an almost completely obscure and virtually irrelevant being! How about that?! I mean the shear potential there is FANTASTIC, right?
Jake chuckles.
Don't get me wrong... I am taking him seriously. I believe he could do like anyone else, and beat me on any given day. But hell, this is someone I actually had to DIG to find anything on. He's been about as "involved" in SCW as MRSA, but nevertheless, you can always start somewhere, right? That career launching point can start at any moment, right?
It isn't happening on fucking Breakdown!
See, when I go out there, and I face off against someone as unknown as Havoc Warrior, I do so with a very specific mindset. I do this knowing that I know very little. The shear amount of time I spent researching anything I could on the guy made me realize I couldn't expect any "guarantees" on him. And from what I found, he's relatively easy to explain away. He's just a hulking brute who is out to try and amp the fans up, do about three muscle moves, and call it a night. The problem is, when you have that much in the way of muscle, you can tire easily. He could probably destroy me in a battle of strength, but all I'd have to do is make him gas himself out, and POOF, I'd be the stronger guy.
That's something a lot of people don't think about.
That is something people may not take into consideration.
So when I go into that ring with someone who is so much more physically gifted, I go out there knowing I may have to wing it, and see if I can gas him out. I won't hide that fact. I won't hide my strategy because it would be painfully obvious anyway, what I was doing. So I am going to go out there and see what he brings, and I will respond accordingly. I will fight him up one side and down the other, and I will show him that power, while it's a nice asset to have, isn't everything. I will make him realize that this "shiny trophy" does more than simply "prove my worth." It shows the world that I am someone who can't be taken lightly.
Don't get me wrong, here... I understand what is at stake for him. He has a chance to shock the world, and beat someone who matters. He has a chance to prove to the world that he is someone who could pull off wins. He has a chance to prove he's not the residential punching bag, that guys like me feed off of, when we know we don't have to work as hard. The problem is, he's run into Jake Starr. He's run into the United States Champion. He's run into a man who has gone out there, night in, night out, since 2009 and done just what he wants to do. I have gone out there, knowing people don't believe in me, and I have defeated people one by one.
I'm the embodiment of what he WISHES he could be.
So while he may try to intimidate me with his booming voice, and his ways of shaking a fucking trailer? Seriously? Really? Has he seen what kind of people I have faced here? I've faced guys like Rachel Foxx, Dillusion, Syren, Christy Matthews, and others who have had that booming personality, and tried to intimidate me. The difference between Havoc and all of them, they had a track record that PROVED to the world that they weren't all talk. He doesn't have that. He doesn't have a track record that says anything outside of the fact that he has a lot of bass, and minimal treble in his voice.
Jake pulls a set of headphones up from his side, and puts them on. These are the type of headphones that many people wear who work on aircraft carriers, to preserve their hearing. After putting them on, Jake begins to talk louder, not realizing that he's on the border of shouting.
See?! I can completely isolate myself from your inane babbling, and inability to accept reality. If you could understand what was staring you DIRECTLY in the face, then you would understand that no matter how much you try and talk yourself up, you won't make it through me. You won't be able to keep up with the pace of CHAMPIONS. Regardless of how much you respect or disrespect this championship belt, you are going to see FIRST FUCKING HAND how superior it makes people in SCW. It may not mean much in some of the shitholes you've competed in, in the past, but here it means a LOT. It shows the world what you're willing to do everything possible to move to the top. It isn't just a fucking accolade. It isn't just a pretty thing we carry around and feel special about.
IT'S EVERYTHING, YOU DISRESPECTFUL FUCK!
When you try and diminish its worth with your BASELESS words, you show me why you've NEVER amounted to anything. You show me why, when you think about this Breakdown in your future, you'll think back and simply remember the LESSON you were taught. You will understand that guys like me, and guys like you, are nowhere near the same plane of existence, but instead, far different. You'll understand that while you may "look" the part, I come around and I prove that the part was DESIGNED FOR ME. You'll understand that in order to win ANY championship in SCW, you have to be willing to respect the belt, and respect what you have to do to get there. This belt means a lot to many, and you'll understand first hand where you screwed up.
You're entering my world at Breakdown...
You're entering a place you will never forget...
You're entering one of Dante's levels of Hell... And the difference is... Unlike the Divine Comedy, you'll not come out on the other side. You'll be stuck in a level of pain and dismay that makes you realize you will NOT amount to anything. After Breakdown, you WILL bow down, and you WILL respect what I stand for. If you don't, you're a dumber motherfucker than the world already thinks you are, and let's be honest, that'd just be fucking sad!
With those final words, Jake goes to look at his US Championship, and the giant headphones tap the belt. Jake had forgotten he was wearing them, as he got so into the promo, but removes them, and goes back to looking at the belt he earned. He knows that, while Havoc may see it as a shiny piece of metal with no real meaning, he can sense that deep down, Havoc realizes what it means. He feels that Havoc knows what beating the United States Champion could do for his career, and that the belt means more than just a mere accolade. Whether or not the world sees that at Breakdown means to be seen.
For Jake, however, he is focused. He wants to beat Havoc, and go out to dominate the weekend pay-per views. With the possibility of facing both Katie Steward and Donovan Kayl, he knows he needs as much momentum, and as much drive as he can get. He knows none of these opponents will simply lie down for him, and he must go out there and prove that he can overcome everything that is thrown in his path, ESPECIALLY if he is planning on stunning the world come Rise to Greatness. He needs everything he can muster, and everything he can do to step up to the big leagues again.
Simply put, he must win.
