The Broken Sanctuary

APOSTASY CHAPTER 6: THE BROKEN SANCTUARY

Two hours... Two relentless, agonizing hours of pushing a tires-screeching engine through a blinding, mid-summer downpour.

By the time Kirsten pulled the truck off the dirt access road and onto the overgrown driveway of the safehouse, the storm had tapered into a steady, suffocating mist. The heavy oak trees overhanging the gravel canopy dripped with an unnatural rhythm, sounding almost like fingers tapping against the roof of her truck.

She didn't turn off the headlights right away. She sat in the idling vehicle, her hands glued to the leather steering wheel, knuckles chalk-white. Through the sweeping path of the windshield wipers, her worst fears weren't just confirmed... They were laid out like a grotesque art installation.

The sanctuary was breached.

The front door had been torn off its frame, hanging at a nauseating, jagged angle by a single bent hinge. Splinters of stained wood littered the wrap-around porch like shrapnel. One of the front bay windows had been shattered inward, leaving sharp, glistening teeth of glass hanging from the sill. The porch light... The light Kirsten had specifically instructed Hailey to keep lit at all times as a signal was smashed. Dangled by a thin blue copper wire, it buzzed and sparked intermittently, casting weak, violent strobes of orange across the muddy front lawn.

Kirsten didn't scream. She didn't weep. Panic had officially burned itself out during the drive, leaving behind a cold, terrifying sediment of pure, calculated instinct.

She reached into the passenger seat and wrapped her fingers around the grip of her wooden baseball bat. It was a heavy, unyielding piece of ash wood, scarred from years of use, cheap, and brutal. She stepped out into the damp air, shutting the truck door with a soft, quiet click.

Every step onto the wooden porch stairs was measured. She kept her weight on the balls of her feet, lowering her center of gravity, her breathing shallow and completely controlled. Her eyes darted across the threshold. Muddy, heavy combat boot tracks smeared across the welcome mat, overlapping in a chaotic cluster. A mass entry. A tactical breach. She slid through the open doorway, bringing the bat up past her shoulder, cocked and ready to swing with lethal force at the first sign of movement.

The interior was a graveyard of memories.

The living room had been systematically turned inside out. The sofa was flipped on its spine, its cushions shredded open with clean, precise knife cuts as if the attackers were looking for hidden compartments or burner phones. The coffee table lay in splinters. Photos of better times, Polaroids of Hailey, Ethan, and Emma at diner tables and boardwalks, were stomped into the floorboards, their glass frames crushed into powder under heavy heels.

The air was heavy, smelling faintly of ozone, copper, and something sickeningly sweet... Like burnt sugar and chemical gas.

Kirsten cleared the perimeter with mechanical efficiency. She checked corners before her body followed, weapon raised, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs that she forcefully pushed down.

Kitchen clear...

Hallway clear...

She reached the threshold of the primary bedroom. A shadow flickered across the wall... A slow, agonizing shift of weight. Kirsten rounded the doorframe in a low crouch, raising the bat high, her muscle memory screaming at her to strike hard and strike first. She stopped inches short of swinging. Lying on the hardwood floor, slumped against the foot of the overturned mattress, was a body. It wasn't an attacker waiting in ambush.

It was Hailey.

Hailey's face was almost unrecognizable under a horrific canvas of deep purple contusions and dark, tacky blood. Her right eye was swollen shut, her lip split wide open, and her tactical vest torn across the chest. She was gasping for air, her chest rising and falling in shallow, agonizing hitches that made her ribs shudder. Kirsten dropped to her knees, the bat clattering against the floorboards as she threw her arms out to stabilize her friend.

Kirsten Scott: Hailey! Jesus Christ... Hailey, are you OK? Look at me!

Hailey let out a low, ragged moan, her throat working hard to swallow the iron taste of her own blood. Her hand twitched against the floor, her fingers curling weakly into Kirsten's sleeve, proving there was still a stubborn spark of life burning inside her.

Kirsten's hands trembled as she checked Hailey's neck for a pulse... It was rapid, threadlike, but present.

Kirsten Scott: OK... Don't move. Do not move. I'm going to finish scouring the house for Emma and Ethan... I'm going to clear the back rooms.

Hailey's swollen eye fluttered, a raw, desperate noise bubbling up from deep in her chest.

Hailey Brooks: They... Got... Them...

The words hit Kirsten like an icy bucket of water poured down her spine. Her posture went rigid. Her eyes jumped upward toward the dark hallway stretching into the rear of the house. She didn't offer a platitude. She didn't offer comfort. She simply stood, grabbed her bat, and expedited her sweep into the back end of the sanctuary.

In the narrow corridor leading to the laundry room, Kirsten found two men laid out on the floor. They were wearing dark, unmarked tactical fatigues. One was slumped against the drywall, his jaw distinctly displaced from what looked like a crushing blow with a blunt object; the other was unconscious, a heavy brass lamp shattered around his head. Hailey hadn't gone down without a fight. She had dragged them into hell with her before she was overwhelmed. Kirsten leaned down, pressing two fingers hard into the carotid artery of the closest man. A faint, steady thud met her fingertips. They were alive, merely rendered unconscious.

She moved past them, her boots stepping carefully around pooled blood, and pushed into the adjoining sibling bedrooms. The rooms were silent. Horrifyingly silent. Emma's bed was unmade, the covers thrown back as if she had been yanked straight out of sleep. On the floor beside the nightstand lay the proof of how the struggle ended. A used glass syringe sat resting on the rug, a tiny droplet of clear, viscous fluid still clinging to the bevel of the needle. Beside it lay a crumpled rag, thick with the sharp, sickening chemical stench of chloroform. And resting squarely in the middle of Emma's neatly folded blanket, placed with meticulous, mocking symmetry, was a single item. A scrap of coarse, unbleached white linen. And resting atop the fabric was a heavy, embossed card printed with a silver emblem... The seal of The Prophets.

Kirsten stood frozen, looking at the card.

The picture painted itself in her mind with brutal, vivid clarity. This wasn't a random, sloppy raid. It was a calculated breach. The Prophets hadn't sent hitmen to put bodies in the ground... They had sent a retrieval team. They had used raw, overwhelming physical violence to batter Hailey into submission, then used chemical sedatives to slip quietly into the night with Emma and Ethan.

They hadn't just taken hostages. They had reclaimed their biological bloodlines. The cult was dying, bleeding out from Kirsten's desertion and financial ruin, and in their absolute desperation, they were dragging their children back to force Emma into becoming the compliant, docile Oracle of a rotten empire.

And on top of it all... They were using the youngest to bait the monster they built back into the trap.

Kirsten picked up the piece of linen, her hand tightening around it until her knuckles turned white. She crushed the card into a ball, shoving it into her pocket.

When she walked back into the primary bedroom, Hailey was already attempting the impossible. Hailey had dragged herself up onto one knee, her back pressed against the frame of the bed, her breath coming in ragged, bloody gasps. Her hands were shaking violently as she pushed against the floor, her body screaming in protest with every inch she gained. Kirsten rushed forward, dropping her bat and reaching out to grab Hailey's shoulders to force her back down.

Kirsten Scott: Stop! You need to stay down! You need to rest... Trust me, I'll handle this...

Before Kirsten's hands could firmly clasp her shoulders, Hailey violently ripped her arm away. The sheer force of the rejection caused Hailey to lose her balance for a fraction of a second, but she caught herself, her remaining good eye flashing with a terrifying, feral fire.

She leaned her head forward and spat a heavy, thick mouthful of dark red blood onto the floorboards directly between Kirsten's boots.

Hailey Brooks: The fuck you will...

Kirsten froze, her hands hovering in the air, genuine shock breaking through her analytical facade.

Kirsten Scott: What?

Hailey Brooks: You're not playing the "Hailey can watch from the sidelines" card again!

Hailey's voice was a harsh, gravelly rasp, but every single syllable was laced with an unyielding steel. She pulled herself up to a full stand, leaning heavily against the wall as her knees buckled momentarily, forcing her weight onto her good leg.

Hailey Brooks: Your predecessor beat the absolute shit out of me, and I'm still breathing! You think some peckerwad thugs are going to be the ones who take me out? Nah, sis... Not this time! They have my boyfriend! They have the little girl we raised into a young woman! And they're sitting in their little fortress of pud-tuggery taunting us?!

Kirsten looked at her, seeing the blood running down Hailey's jaw, seeing the agonizing limp as Hailey took a shuddering step forward. Yet, despite the broken skin and shattered bones, there was no fear in Hailey's eyes. Only an absolute, apocalyptic rage that matched Kirsten's own.

Kirsten Scott: Then what are you proposing?

Hailey didn't answer with words right away. She reached down with a bruised, trembling hand and grabbed a heavy steel pipe that had been resting against the overturned nightstand, the very weapon she had used to break the jaw of the attacker in the hallway.

She tightened her grip on the steel until her forearm muscles corded like iron cables. She adjusted her weight, ignoring the sharp spike of pain in her leg, and took a step toward the breached front door. She stopped at the threshold, turned her head slightly, and looked back at Kirsten through her swollen, blood-rimmed eye.

Hailey Brooks: We do what we should have done the last time we walked away from that place... We burn that fucking place to the GROUND, together!

Hailey motioned with a sharp jerk of her chin toward the rain outside, taking the lead herself, taking her first heavy, limping step out into the mist. Kirsten stood in the center of the shattered bedroom for a single beat. She looked down at her hands... Hands that had tried to keep everyone safe through cold, distant tactics and paranoid isolation. She realized then that the tactician was dead. The chess game was over.

She reached down, scooped her baseball bat off the floor, and stepped into the stride right behind Hailey, walking toward the hell that awaited them.

PROMO

There was a time in my life when I listened to someone give a whole impassioned speech about "dreams" and what they meant to her. In response to her directly... Well, I will get to that in a moment. But first, let me tell you what a dream actually represents to a rational mind.

A dream is a subconscious haven. It is a place where, for all intents and purposes, a human being can exert total control and dominance over everything. It is a glorified safe space we construct to keep ourselves sane. Now, before people try to contradict me and argue about nightmares... Yes, there are nuances to everything. I can see the argument that you are not in control when a nightmare takes over. But I would counter that with a simple question: How many of you have actually died in your nightmares? How many of you have jumped awake just a fraction of a second before the fatal blow landed? Seriously... How many of you have pulled yourselves out of the abyss just in the nick of time?

Is that not a semblance of control?

Is that not your subconscious mind asserting absolute dominance over the narrative, keeping you safe from ultimate destruction?

I would argue the answer is an overwhelming yes. In fact, it proves my point entirely. No matter what happens to you inside a dream, no matter how much horror you witness, no matter how much raw fear you experience, your mind keeps you safe by never allowing the absolute worst to come to fruition.

Like I said... A safe space. A world where you are always in command, where you are always the hero, where you are the sole protagonist of your own engineered story. It is a reality created by you, for you, and only you. Nobody can infiltrate it. Nobody can sabotage it. We do not possess the technology to reach into a person's head and ruin their internal sanctuary.

And yet, people place so much stock in dreams. People use dreams as an emotional crutch to build a fantasy world they lack the capability to forge in real life.

And unfortunately, Glory... You have drifted right into that exact trap.

You have allowed yourself to sink into a mindset where your internal dreams are beginning to dictate what you believe is real. You sit there and convince yourself that you can simply wish things into existence, when reality works on a completely different set of rules. You do not just make dreams come true through sheer willpower. If that were how the world operated, everyone would have everything they ever wanted. Every gambling addict would be a billionaire. Every person who ever laid in bed dreaming of being a professional athlete would be standing in a hall of fame. The very industry we compete in would be an oversaturated market of self-made gods, and everyone would be at the top of the mountain.

If dreams were real, we would all effectively be the exact same.

Yet here you are, standing on your pedestal, talking about your dreams and how you... Of all the billions of people on this planet... Somehow manifested every single one of them into physical reality. How you alone accomplished what millions have failed to do. You want us to believe you proved that dreams come true simply because Glory Braddock willed it so.

So congrats, Glory. You have defied the laws of human nature. You have achieved the ultimate cosmic miracle. Why you are wasting your time as a professional wrestler is completely beyond me, because by your own logic, you could literally have anything you ever dreamed of holding.

Unfortunately, the truth has a funny habit of cutting through the noise.

Unfortunately for you... You are dead wrong.

You see, Glory, I initially thought you were going to present an honest argument. You started off by admitting that dreams do not generally come true, that they do not spontaneously exist... But then in the very next breath, you claimed you had to force them into being. You claimed you fought to turn a dream into reality.

So which is it? Which one is the real Glory Braddock philosophy?

I am not going to sit here and insult you for a blatant contradiction, because picking at sloppy logic is low-hanging fruit. Instead, I am going to point out what that contradiction actually reveals about you: It shows how terrified you are. It exposes how desperately your mind needs this win going into Rise to Greatness, because the seed of self-doubt has already taken root. You and I have never crossed paths in a ring, yet Kirsten Scott already has you questioning your hopes, your legacy, and your future before the bell has even rung.

You are lost, Glory.

Your mind is scrambling for some semblance of structure to hold onto.

But there is nothing there to grab, is there?

I was completely transparent when I said I have a massive challenge ahead of me. I was honest about my focus. You, on the other hand... I do not know if you are ready for me, if you are ready for Luz, or if you are ready to collapse under the crushing weight of your own fear of failure. Your voice was shaky. Your words were defensive. You started opining about how if you lose to me, Rise to Greatness will not even matter anymore. You showed your true colors, Glory. You revealed that you view me as a mere stepping stone, yet you cannot even keep your eyes on the path while trying to navigate the SCW waters.

I do not blame you for being scared. If I put my entire future into a single basket like that, I would be trembling at the thought of facing someone like me, too.

But I have not done that. I do not need a victory the way you need one. I want to win, but my entire existence is not riding on it. I do not carry the panic of having everything to lose, because if I fall, I regroup and adapt. You, however... You clearly do not view a rebound as an option. You view this match as a career-ending trial. Your entire world has become doom and gloom, and the sheer hysteria of it is completely lost on me. It is all or nothing in your head. If you do not win, nothing matters. Your championship history becomes irrelevant. Rise to Greatness becomes pointless.

Grow up.

The fact is, Glory, you have accomplished far more than I have in SCW, and you did not do it with this melodramatic, life-or-death mentality. If you step into that ring with me carrying that kind of emotional baggage, it is going to be a very swift night for you. You will be kicked straight back into lala land, where you can go back to dreaming about rainbows, unicorns... Or according to your own delusion, a victory over me.

Because I am walking into Breakdown with a clear plan, and none of it involves looking past you. You are it. You are my sole focus. I have long-term goals, but right now, you are the only obstacle in my line of sight. So while I respect what you have done in the past, while I acknowledge how you rose from the unknown to the peak of SCW... You, my dear, have officially lost the plot.

Come Breakdown, I hope you are prepared for a brutal reality check. I hope you are ready for a nightmare you cannot wake up from, and a mind that will not rescue you at the last second. Because when that bell rings, you will not be standing in the land of make-believe...

No...

You will be standing in the land where you walked directly into my light... And watched your entire world GO DARK!
